Company background
Yggdrasil Gaming is a Malta-based game developer founded in 2013 by Fredrik Elmqvist, a former Net Entertainment (NetEnt) executive. The company shares its name with the "world tree" of Norse mythology.
Yggdrasil didn't start with slots. Its first products were RNG lottery games such as scratchcards, video keno and lotto-style games. In May 2013, Malta's Lotteries and Gaming Authority, the predecessor of today's Malta Gaming Authority, granted Yggdrasil a Class 4 remote gaming licence. Elmqvist said at the time that the company had gone from "the first shovel into the ground" to a certified suite of more than 20 games in about seven months.
Over the next decade Yggdrasil moved into video slots, table games and bingo. It also started a publishing and partner programme now called YG Masters, which distributes games from independent partner studios on Yggdrasil's technology. The company's 2023 corporate presentation lists Malta Critical Gaming Supply among its licences and staff in Sweden, Poland and Malta. Its timeline also mentions a change of majority owner.
The UK Gambling Commission's public register lists Yggdrasil Gaming Limited (account 44137) with a remote casino licence active since 22 December 2015 and a head office in San Ġiljan, Malta.
In January 2025, Yggdrasil announced an exclusive deal giving Aristocrat Interactive the rights to distribute Yggdrasil content in regulated US markets and Ontario.
Notable Yggdrasil games
- Vikings Go Berzerk: A 5-reel, 4-row video slot with 25 paylines, released in November 2016. Each Viking has a "rage meter" that fills on wins. When it's full, that Viking goes Berzerk in free spins and becomes a sticky Wild. Yggdrasil lists an RTP of 96.1% and medium-high volatility.
- Valley of the Gods and Valley of the Gods 2: Egyptian-themed games. They are among Yggdrasil's best-known series and are featured in its 2025 marketing.
- Lucky Neko Gigablox: A title built on Yggdrasil's GigaBlox mechanic.
- Hyperburst and Jackpot Express: Other titles Yggdrasil has highlighted in distribution announcements.
RTP is a long-run theoretical average. Always check the in-game help screen.
